Corey's Rockin' Rig: 1986-F-250

Nov 17th 2021

Corey’s 1986 Ford F-250 started life as a straight and clean 2wd longbed with a 6.9 liter 420 cubic inch IDI (indirect injection) non turbo diesel. Indirect injection engines mix air and fuel in a pre-chamber before the mixture enters the cylinder. The 6.9 L engine naturally aspirated put out 170 horsepower and 315 pound feet of torque . 1986 was the last year of production for the 7th Generation of Ford’s F series trucks which began in 1979.

Corey likes to keep his rig “junkyard cheap” and only spend money on the hardcore parts necessary to get out and have fun. His F-250 has been running trails reliably for 9 years with few changes beyond tires and small upgrades.

In its current form, Corey’s truck sports a NP435 transmission, NP205 with a twin stick conversion that is connected to a Sterling 10.25 rear end and a Dana hp60 front axle. For inexpensive traction Corey has welded up the rear end and added a Spartan locker up front. Connecting that power to the tires in the hp60 are 35 spline chromoly inner and outer shafts with super joints and Yukon drive slugs.

To get all the flex Corey runs Chevy 63” rear springs and a home built front leaf pack. He rolls on 42x15r17 Pitbull Rockers mounted up to some diy beadlocks. And, Corey isn’t afraid to heat those tires up.

If you want to catch Corey’s rig in action get out to one of the Fullsize Takeover events hosted on the East Coast. At parks like Rausch Creek and AOAA Corey puts his rig to the test against huge loose rocks, steep slippery terrain and tight unforgiving trees.
